Our Mission

The foundation of our mission is our love of the ocean and yachting. We have created three principles that we promote the adoption of through our GreenYacht certification program.

The First GreenYacht Principle

Achieve zero carbon yacht operation

Operating a yacht is energy demanding but there are plenty of ways to offset a yacht’s carbon footprint through a wide range of offset initiatives worldwide. As part of the GreenYacht Certification Program, we work with yachts to help calculate their carbon footprint and then connect them with the best carbon offsetting initiatives for their program.

The Second GreenYacht Principle

Eliminate single-use plastics onboard

Single-use plastics account for significant amounts of the waste that flows into the oceans every year. Because plastics don’t degrade you can now find plastic waste on even the most remote beaches in the world. We owe it to future generations to reduce our use of plastics to help preserve the beauty of the marine environments we all know and love.

oceancleanup

Every year, millions of tons of plastic enter the oceans primarily from rivers. The plastic afloat across the oceans – legacy plastic – isn’t going away by itself. Therefore, solving ocean plastic pollution requires a combination of stemming the inflow and cleaning up what has already accumulated. The Ocean Cleanup, a non-profit organization, is developing advanced technologies to rid the world’s oceans of plastic.

marinesafe

In 2012 scientists at the IPSO State of the Ocean workshop identified pollution as a significant and under-recognised threat to the ocean and called for urgent action to address it. Much of this pollution originates from domestic sources in the form of ingredients used in personal care products, for instance sunscreen and single-use plastic such as bags and water bottles. MarineSafe is a campaign that aims to reduce the number of toxic chemicals and plastics finding their way into the ocean through replacement, management and user engagement.

The Third GreenYacht Principle

Promote marine ecosystem awareness

Our oceans and the animals that live in them are under extreme pressure from human activities including over-fishing, pollution and climate change. In order to understand the severity of the challenges facing marine ecosystems we must gather reputable information and then share that information as broadly as possible. The yacht community is uniquely positioned to promote awareness around these issues because these environments are our home.
